Fighting poverty in Cartagena

Since 2013, with the aim of helping to stem the rising poverty prevalent in certain parts of the city of Cartagena, Aguas de Cartagena has developed a programme intended to improve the situation of access to water in deprived neighbourhoods. Developed in conjunction with the city council and local associations, the programme is based on a holistic approach that makes it possible to take account of all dimensions of poverty. Numerous forms of community action and projects intended to encourage schooling and to develop income-generating activities are in place today to make an impact on all aspects of the inhabitants’ living conditions and guarantee better access to services for everyone.

The Water forSlums programme

Under the contract signed in 2014 between the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and SUEZ environnement, a project dedicated to improving access to water for inhabitants of the Mumbai slums has been under way since last July. To cope with the scale of the problem and allow the introduction of sustainable solutions to improve water supply for 6 million people living in these informal settlements, the project, which is managed by a specially created team, is based on a three-part methodology consisting of diagnosis, implementation and replication across the whole city. When the five-year project reaches completion, access to water will have been improved for 750,000 people.

Partnership with the French multi-service information and mediation network (PIMMS)

On November 26, 2014, SUEZ environnement and the French multi-service information and mediation network signed a partnership agreement to strengthen their collaboration at national level. Created to support fragile individuals and families in their use of public services, there are currently 63 multi-service information and mediation offices in France. The partnership, which aims to strengthen SUEZ environnement’s presence on the ground to be closer to its users, includes the creation of a catalogue defining all the services that can be performed by the network on behalf of SUEZ environnement, a training programme focusing specifically on managing financially vulnerable customers, and supporting a transition to long-term employment for the network’s personnel, who were previously employed through social integration contracts.
