Future of Waste: a digital platform for stakeholders to network

In association with MakeSense, SUEZ environnement has launched a collaborative platform called Future of Waste. Open to a wide range of stakeholders – citizens, artists, inventors, public-sector institutions, private-sector businesses – the platform enables its members to interact on projects in order to share innovative local solutions for waste. Through the exchange of idea and know-how, appeals for collaborators and the organisation of events, each member can contribute to meeting the challenges of waste management today and tomorrow: encouraging an economy that is more circular and more virtuous for society and the environment. Among other initiatives, Future of Waste enabled the team of a Parisian restaurant to bring together a group of ten volunteers from a variety of backgrounds in February 2015 to help them design a waste management plan (upstream reduction of waste, particularly packaging, transformation of a maximum of waste on the spot, development of a specialised collection stream, information and awareness campaigns) with the aim of becoming a model of the circular economy in the catering sector.

Finding out more about water poverty in Martinique and working with stakeholders who can help

SUEZ environnement is one of four sanitation services operators in Martinique. Observing a worsening of payment difficulties for some of its customers, the company organised a workshop in January 2014 in partnership with two local associations for seniors. It involved 50 stakeholders active in dealing with poverty, in particular with respect to housing, to explore challenges and possible actions in combating water poverty. In the morning, discussions focused on the different faces of poverty and existing aid schemes in Martinique, as well as experiences in overcoming water poverty around the world. Using the World Café method, the afternoon session was used to identify possible improvements in Martinique, particularly with regard to coordination between the company and Martinique’s social workers.

Commitment 10 : work together on solutions and have an open dialogue with our stakeholders

In a world that is under increasing strain, the sustainable management of resources calls for genuine collaboration between players. It’s about doing more with less by combining our energy. Having endeavoured for 10 years to build a solid dialogue with stakeholders in its activities, SUEZ environnement is contributing to the improvement of resource management.

2016 targets

Propose to the authorities implementing dialogue structures with stakeholders during the signing of new contracts of considerable size (towns with over 300,000 inhabitants).

Systematise upstream dialogue with all stakeholders for complex industrial site projects of major regional significance, and with a prior analysis of regional impact on each occasion(1).

(1) Indicator used: number of debates and public meetings

Regularly organise stakeholder sessions at Group level with a view at involving NGOs, elected representatives and experts in the development and evaluation of our Sustainable Development policy.
